Carlos López, competing for the first time in a 140.6 Ironman triathlon, came in first in a time of eight hours, twenty-six minutes and nine seconds in today's Thomas Cook Ironman Mallorca. The amateur with CN Llucmajor was more than five minutes ahead of Markus Fachbach, a German one-time European champion.

In the women's event, American Jocelyn McCauley, also taking part in her first full-length Ironman, won in a time of nine hours, eleven minutes and fifty-five seconds.

The contestants faced some poor conditions, with rain falling later in the day, the swimming leg having started at eight this morning. In Alcudia, all main roads were open by six in the evening, with plenty of people lined the route as participants continued to make their way along the final running leg.
