The fifth Evolution! Mallorca International Film Festival opened on Thursday night and paid tribute to US comedy actor and filmmaker, Danny DeVito.

As the centrepiece of the festival, DeVito received the inaugural "Evolution Honorary Award", and to tie in with the event there will be a special screening of DeVito’s celebrated battle of the sexes comedy War Of The Roses, followed by an on-stage conversation with the actor.

This evening, he is presenting his latest short film, Curmudgeons, at Cine Ciutat before a question and answer session.

The opening night gala at the Teatro Principal featured the screening of El Destierro, produced by Majorcan Goya-nominated filmmakers Toni Bestard, Marcos Cabotá and Diana de la Cuadra, but the night very much belonged to DeVito who captured everybody’s hearts with his great sense of humour. Accompanied by his son Jack, he spoke of how he first came to Majorca with his great friend Michael Douglas some 25 years ago and has fond memories of the island.

The festival runs until 12 November.
