To The Editor,
My subject is noise pollution and over charging. Could a marine engineer or a marine architect explain to me why the two brand new superferries have got to be the noisiest ferries in the whole of creation. Thankfully they are only in port for 5 -6 hours but the high decibel powered roar from their ventilating fans drives one to distraction when you are living as I do, only 200 metres from where they are parked. Also on noise pollution, why is it immature imbeciles on high powered Harleys (also goes for imbeciles on low powered Derbi's) with illegal straight-through exhaust systems are allowed to ride their monsters up and down the Paseo Maritimo (west end) anywhere between 2am and 5am while normal folk are resting. Are Palma's “finest” all off duty in the wee hours or is it that they just don't care a hoot or a holler. I notice they (the police) are pretty sharp off the mark if you over-park a split second too long, but they have no simple hand held decibel sets to clamp down on the two wheel lunatics in the wee hours. Now on the subject of overcharging, I was relieved of 14'000 pesetas recently by a lock smith (cerrajero) when my door slammed shut behind me, this is at 11am. He arrived and opened the door with his master key in about one and a half seconds and presented his bill. Of course I should have asked for an estimate but we never think of things like that when you're in your speedy underwear at 11 in the morning outside your door. Too late in life I have found a fool-proof way of getting rich legally -be a locksmith - 14'000 for two seconds work equals about 25m an hour.
