Dear Sir,
Saturday's spate of letters/comments on fast food, McDonlands and the like in the Bulletin - one letter from a parent praising it for the ease to satisfy his children's needs/tastes abroad, all miss the point.

With the introduction of this American “fare” over the past 40 years or so, a most serious health problem has arisen, whereby in the United Kingdom, between 40 to 50 per cent of the population is either serioulsy over weight or actually obese; in the United States the figure is fast approaching 60 per cent.

Apart from the daily discomfort this must give the dedicated junk food victims, their health will progressively decline, rapidly and of course shortern their life span.

The article on the front page of the Majorca Daily Bulletin (Saturday) about an American, 5ft10” weighing 272 pounds (approx 20 stone) who is leading the way to sue the fast food producers for not labelling/describing their products and the risk involved in eating them, is an example of the end result.

Bit like smoking actually, but I suppose even if fast food carried a warning “This product could serioulsy effect your health” people would still buy and eat it. If parents brought up their children on the understanding that junk food was just that, and fed them a tasty nutritious alternative, their lives would be better and longer. Ofcourse that would take some effort and dedication easier to just go with the flow and watch them grow.

Yourse sincerely

Graham Phillips
