In the days when tourism was being pioneered to Majorca I suspect that one of the travel companies would have organised a special flight or a package holiday to see the Christmas lights being turned on. Yes, the festive lights in the city are very impressive and yes I am sure that many tourists would love to come and see them if they could get here. Perhaps one of the problems of the travel industry is that it has become too inflexible. We may have no-frills airlines and easy-to book-holidays but it is a pretty rigid industry. End of the season and end of the flights- so really there is little happening until the season starts again in February.

There are plenty of reasons to visit Mallorca in the winter, but trying to turn Palma into a Christmas destination is a non starter. I suspect that if people want to go on a Christmas themed break, they will be heading to Lapland, or the fabulous Christmas markets in Germany and Austria. Spend the winter marketing budget on battles Mallorca is likely to win, golf, hiking, cycling etc I imagine they will get a better return on their investment,
Simple maths also comes into play: it is cheaper for 1 or 2 people to fly back to the U. K. than for the rest of the family to fly out to Mallorca.
Could the following, published in your newspaper not long ago, be one of the reasons ?.Another may be that the “authorities” are making a big effort by taxing anyone who is foolish enough to want to come here.“As if confirmation were actually needed as to the rising cost of staying in hotels in Majorca and the Balearics, the National Statistics Institute has provided it anyway. It reveals that between January and October this year hotel prices increased by 31.7%”.
