"The US pays close to the entire cost of NATO - protecting many of these same countries that rip us off on trade (they pay only a fraction of the cost - and laugh!)," President Donald Trump tweeted yesterday. As much as I dislike Trump he does have a point. The European allies spend very little on defence and for this reason the U. military has bases across Europe. You would have thought that in this post-Cold war era, Europe would be able to take care of itself. But no. Defence spending in Europe has been dropping dramatically over the last decade with countries like Germany spending the least. Britain does spend the two per cent of GDP NATO figure but only just, and some countries in Europe do not even come close.

USA used to rely on UK and other parts of Europe to be a sort-of land-based aircraft/missile carrier for its nuclear and conventional weapons BUT doesn't need it now for self-protection because the major nuclear devices have practically worldwide range. It's not much point, however, leaving Europe at the mercy of Putin's immoral expansive thinking because if Western Europe became a sitting duck for his bullying the USA would lose many valuable markets in the carnage. It's therefore in all interests to broker a compromise.
I agree your comment. Hopefully there will be no more conventional Wars, or Nuclear weapons used. Most Countries have reduced their Defence spending to economise, and fund other costs.Which endorses the ' fraction of the costing reasons '.BUT, the World is now under attack from Terrorism .There needs to be a combined world defence project to defeat the terrorist threats to ALL Countries. Thereby hekping to reduce the refugees crisis.
