THE first baby born in the Balearics in the New Year was Patricia Sánchez Camacho, born at 2.53am at the Can Misses hospital of Ibiza. She weighed in at 3'646 grams and there were no complications in the birth. Her mother had not been expecting to give birth until Friday, but the family had to interrupt the New Year's Eve dinner party at 11pm to rush her to hospital. The second baby born in the Balearics was also a girl, Antonia, born at 7.05am at the Manacor hospital.
Her parents, Francisca Mestres Gayà and Joan Amer Alomar, of Sineu, were not expecting her to arrive until January 8. She weighed 2'930 grams and is 47 centimetres long. Her parents already have a three year old boy named Miquel.
The second birth in Majorca, was a boy who arrived at the Policlinica Miramar in Palma at 8.20am. He weighed 3'450 grams and was 53 centimetres long. His parents are Miguel Angel Puerto Sanchez of Espectacles Vicens and Pilar Carbonell. Marc, as he will be called, is their second child.
Another new arrival was Joana, born at Son Dureta at 9.52am. Her mother, also named Joana, is from Llucmajor, and had been spending a quiet New Year at home when she went into labour. One of the last babies to be born on New Year's Eve, too impatient to await the Millennium, was Sebastià, son of Pedro Carbonell, who is the European and world underwater spear fishing champion. His paternal grandfather is also a champion in the same sport and his great uncle is the legendary Pep Armengual, so there is no prize for guessing what sport he will be encouraged to practice when he grows up.
