RESIDENTS in Pollensa and the Port were in state of shock yesterday in respose to the news that a young couple from the town had died in an accident while on a skiing holiday in the French Alps, in the resort of La Plagne. The deaths of 20-year-old Javier Vila, a history student at the Balearic University and his 18-year-old girlfriend Sandra Romero, who was studying journalism in Barcelona, have brought a sharp and painful end to the Christmnes celebration for everybody in the Pollensa area. The two had been together for two years and spent a great deal of time together. They arrived in France on January 1, still trying to come to terms with the death of Vila's paternal grandfather just days before. Accompanied by another couple from Pollensa, they were staying at a chalet in la Plagne which belongs for to members of his mother's family. On Tuesday they decided to ski in a neighbouring resort, Champagny and at six o'clock that evening all four were to meet up on the slopes after a day on the slopes. After joining up Javier and Sandra decided to take a stroll round a peak to look at the view. Although the exact details of the accident remain unclear, investigators believe that the two Majorcans were making their way towards a ridge, at an altitude of some 1.250 metre, to enjoy the view. Nobody knows what happened next but the two fell down a 35 metre void. Neither sets of parents found out about the tragic accident until the following day and the four skiiers were due to return home to Pollensa tomorrow.
