The Balearic tourism industry could cash in on the millennium apathy in the UK if the industry plays its cards right. Indications from the industry since travel agents in Britain opened their doors after the extended New Year holiday, which some fear was a mistake, is that millennium fever is having more of an effect on summer holiday sales than it did over the Christmas and New Year period. Hoteliers in Spain and the Balearics were forced to admit yesterday that bookings were unusually low because they priced themselves out of the market. However, a record number of Britons are expected to head for the sun this summer and travel agents are aleady slashing the prices in order to make up for the millennium short-fall. But the Balearics will have to keep an eye on the market, as the best offers are to long haul destinations such as the Caribbean or, slightly closer to home the Balearics' main competitors the Canaries and cruises.
