Traffic has become a major problem in Majorca, especially in Palma, and the annual increase in the number of cars on the roads is not only taking its toll on society but also the environment and natural resources. The Esquerra Unida, United Left Party, yesterday launched its campaign to transform the year 2000 into the year of public transport yesterday and called on car owners to consider the vehicle “as an option, not a necessity.” Spokesperosn for the Esquerra Unida, Margalida Thomás, presented the campaign yesterday and explained that the drive to get people out of their cars, off the roads and on to public transport, is to continue throughout the year, with Palma being the main target of the campaign.
