The Institue for Spanish Hotel Quality (ICHE) yesterday launched a 200 million peseta publicity campaign in order to promote the organisation's existence, aims and achievements.

The Institute, which is based in Calvia, started in 1997 with a pilot scheme in Magaluf and Palmanova which proved extremely successful.
In 1998 the hotel associations in Paguera, Santa Ponsa, Portals Nous and Illetas joined the Institute as the campaign for quality spread across the Calvia area, which is one of the most popular summer tourist destinations in Europe. At present, 1'300 hotels across Spain are signed up to the quality improvement project, of which 123 have been awarded the quality certificate. In Majorca, which accounts for the largest number of members, there are 400 and the figure is continually rising, said the ICHE chairman Eduardo Gamero yesterday. “What started off as a pilot scheme five years ago has blossomed into a national project with a high level of success,” Gamero said.
