The inaugural Concurs International de Cant came to an impressive conclusion at the Auditorium in Palma on Thursday night when the jury awarded the two first prizes of more than one million pesetas each to the Italian soprano Gianna Queni and the Mexican baritone Carlos Almaguer. From among the fifty singers from fifteen countries who had been competing all week in the preliminary stages at the Balears Conservatory of Music in Palma the jury chose eight from six countries to appear for final judging at the Auditorium with the Balearic Symphony Orchestra, whose flexible and supportive playing under the direction of Renato Palumbo must have been immensely helpful to the singers.
