The non-governmental organisation Bomberos sin Fronteras (Firemen without Frontiers) yesterday took possession of four fire-fighting vehicles which will be sent to Nicaragua and Guatemala. The four fire-fighters were handed over to the organisation by the Palma City Council at an official presentation held at the Palma fire station on the Son Castello industrial estate. All of the vehicles have been especially chosen in order to cope with the tough and demanding terrain in both of the South American countries. The deputy mayor of Palma, Jose Manuel Sierra, said yesterday that the new equipment will help the fire fighting services in the two countries overcome the serious difficulties they are faced with, due to lack of new and efficient equipment. The Nicaraguan and Guatemalan fire brigades are operating with equipment bought at the end of the 80s and, although some of the equipment has been replaced, a complete overhaul is needed. Palma fire brigade chief, Guillem Garcia, said yesterday that over 150 million pesetas will be spent on updating the service in the capital over the next four years, in order to be able to increase the service's level of response and operation.
