Balearic Chief Minister Francesc Antich last night met the former leader of the PSOE Socialist party, Joaquín Almunia, for talks in Minorca. Almunia is currently on the island recovering from last Sunday's crushing general election defeat, in response to which he stood down before all the final votes had even been counted.

The meeting has been described as a private affair and will be held over dinner, which will also be attended by the PSOE leader of the Insular Council of Minorca, Joana Barceloa. Almunia arrived on the island with his wife on Thursday, but has refused to make any comments about the election and his future. Antich and his wife arrived in Minorca on Friday night and spent most of yesterday sight-seeing. This morning Antich and Barcelo will attend the agricultural fair in Alaior, where a horse show is being held.
