The President of the Spanish Confederation of Business Organisations warned yesterday that a tourist tax in the Balearics would have a series of negative effects. José María Cuevas told business leaders that the tax would reduce the region's competitiveness in the global tourist market and that tourism is absolutely vital for the Balearics. He also urged the business community to proceed with caution in its bid to participate in the privatisation of Palma's Son Sant Joan airport. Cuevas said that the Spanish airport authority's privatisation plans are “very complicated” and reminded the business community that it is not just about resolving the problems at a single airport but the whole Spanish network. Cuevas said that he would favour a move to introduce a set of criteria which would initially apply to all of Spain's airports and which could eventually be adapted to meet the more specific and individual needs in different areas.
