The Ministry of Defence has eliminated the obligation to pay honour to foreign flotillas entering the port of Mahon by firing a gun salute. This salute was made centuries ago from San Felipe castle, then from La Mola and in more recent years from the Naval Base. However, the custom had fallen into disuse because of the lack of suitable artillery and because of the possible danger to the cliffs behind the Naval Base. The ministry has now ruled that the salvo does not have to be fired in Mahon or Algeciras. Salvoes will still be fired in the ports of El Ferrol, Cadiz, Cartagena, Ceuta, Melilla, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The custom dates from the end of the 16th century.
