ALAS (The Association for the Fight Against AIDS) held its now traditional memorial for the persons who have died of AIDS in Palma's Plaza Mayor. Members of the Association made a huge heart of red and white carnations and red candles in the centre of the busy square. With this gesture the Association not only wants to remember the victims of AIDS but also raise public awareness of the importance of not shunning victims. It also provides information on how to prevent infection. ALAS has been organising the tribute since 1995. In addition to the heart of flowers, the assocation set up tables to provide information on AIDS. These tables attracted a large number of people yesterday, and the volunteers who manned them were kept busy distributing leaflets and providing information on how to prevent AIDS. ALAS, which also means wings, takes its name from its initials in Spanish.
