Balearic MP's yesterday gave their unanimous support to the motion that cannabis should be legalised so that it can be used by patients for therapeutic reasons in the Balearics. The motion was tabled by the socialist member of parliament, Francina Armengol, who highlighted the scientific evidence which supports the medical benefits of using marijuana. Armengol explained that cannabis, in certain cases, helps to ease the suffering of patients. In the wake of yesterday's unanimous vote in favour of the motion, the Balearic government will now have to lobby central government to legalise the use of cannabis for medical purposes. It was also claimed during yesterday's debate on the subject that nearly all of the present MP's have tried cannabis at some point in their lives. Armengol said that a sizeable part of society backs the motion and called for an end to the “demonisation” of cannabis and the possible therapeutic powers it possesses.
