Palma dockers were left stunned yesterday after a 22-year-old dock worker died while a container ship was being unloaded on the commercial quay. The victim, identified as Yoder Lodi, was apparently crushed by a container on board the ship as she was being unloaded. The accident happened at 8.30am and the emergency services were called to the scene within minutes. However, according to sources for the 061 ambulance service, there was little that could have been done to save the young man who died at the scene. Balearic Minister for Labour Eberhard Grosske visited the scene of the tragedy with a team of inspectors who have launched a full inquiry. The accident prompted calls from the UGT, General Workers Union, in Palma yesterday for a shock campaign to be launched to reduce accidents in the work place and to ensure that companies respect the health and safety requirements.
