The Ibizan tourism authorities are trying to rid the island of its drug culture image, but has decided to cash in on the island's rich and famous. During the summer more rich and famous visit Ibiza than any other of the Balearic islands and many, such as Elle MacPherson, Jade Jagger and Noel Gallagher, have holiday homes on the island. It was revealed yesterday that Mick Jagger, a regular face on the island's party circuit, and his daughter Jade, who last year opened an exclusive club on the island, are to front a star-studded promotional campaign for the island. Over the past few years Ibiza has developed in to one of the hubs of British music and with that has come the island's star status with the likes of Kylie Minogue, Geri Halliwell, Victoria Beckham, Grace Jones, Puff Daddy Coombs, JK, to name just a few, topping the bill at the island's top clubs. For some however, such as Mike Oldfield, life on the island has become too racy and he has sold his luxury villa. He sold it to Oasis's guitarist Noel Gallagher two years ago just before he and his wife divorced. Ibiza has taken the initiative with the new promotional campaign which is still being kept very much under wraps. Last year a number of Majorca's famous visitors moved their yachts to Ibiza because mooring fees were becoming too expensive in Majorca and the Ibizan night life was more exciting. The rich and famous are no strangers to Ibiza, Wham recorded their first music video at Pikes Hotel, which is a big favourite with Naomi Campbell and the like. Some may see the campaign as a rather bold move, but it is certainly going to catch the attention of the global market.
