The Majorca Daily Bulletin and the Balearic ministry for tourism, with the support of British Midland and Costa Nord invite you to a free lecture by world famous explorer and environmentalist Colonel John Blashford Snell, OBE, at the Costa Nord cultural centre in Valldemossa on June 6 at 8p.m. Lecture will be in English. Invitations for this Jubilee Week event will be available from our offices in the Paseo de Mallorca from the middle of next week. There is no admission charge but places are limited and the invitations will be issued on a first come, first served basis. Invitations must be shown on the night. The lecture entitled, What A Wonderful World will give an insight into the adventures of the Colonel and the need to preserve the environment both here in Majorca and across the world. He will also speak of the importance of the Tramuntana mountain range and use the excellent audio-visual facilities which are available at the Michael Douglas-owned cultural centre. The lecture will be presented by Tiffany Blackman, Director of the Balearic Tourism Promotion Body, IBATUR. Numerous important guests from the Majorcan community have been invited to the event which is a showcase for the Jubilee and also as the Bulletin approaches its 40th anniversary. Having organised and led over sixty expeditions, Colonel John Blashford Snell has built up a reputation as a practical field engineer and become one of the world's most renowned and highly respected explorers. His innovative method of negotiating white water in inflatable boats has been adopted as a worldwide sport. He was awarded the famous Segrave Trophy in 1974 following his Zaire River expedition together with his comrades. Born in 1936, he was educated at Victoria College, Jersey and subsequently entered The Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. He served for 37 years in the Army and saw active service in many areas. In 1969, the Colonel formed the Scientific Exploration Society, their aim being to 'foster and encourage scientific exploration worldwide'. The SES became the parent body for several worldwide ventures.
