The new Bendinat Tunnel was officially opened yesterday, improving access to Bendinat and also easing traffic through Cala Mayor and San Agustin. The new tunnel links the Palma to Andraitx motorway with the Ponent dual carriage-way and was opened by President of the Insular Council of Majorca, Maria Antonia Munar yesterday who, as she cut the ribbon, declared “this is a historic day because we've opened to traffic a new road a year ahead of schedule.” The whole project has cost 12 million euros and Munar was accompanied by Balearic President Francesc Antich, Calvia Mayor Margarita Najera and a host of dignitaries. Munar said that the quick completion of the project shows how well the various institutions can co-operate in Majorca and also stressed that the new construction is not a blot on the landscape and has not damaged the environment. Antich expressed his satisfaction with the project, echoing Munar's praise for how the various institutions worked together. Najera said that this week has been an important one for Calvia with the opening of the Santa Ponsa roundabout and the mayor said that with the opening of the Bendinat tunnel, one of the municipality's main problems, traffic, has been eased. Najera added that the project was not easy to complete and thanked the community for having helped push ahead with the proposal and put up with traffic jams and disruption while the tunnel and the Santa Ponsa roundabout were built. “It's a proud day for Calvia,” she declared.
