Balearic leader Francesc Antich called on island residents to “advance towards the Utopia of a better world” in his traditional End of Year speech. Changes in the economy, technology and the mentality of persons are, according to Antich, “an opportunity to improve,” and he said that the government was working for “a prosperous future in which we will all have the same opportunities, regardless of social condition or place of birth.” One of the objectives proposed by Antich in his message was to advance along the path of justice and equality, without forgetting that “individual wellbeing is incomplete if it is not united to collective wellbeing.” Antich went on to say “I will never resign myself to accept the existence of social inequalities which cannot be solved,” adding that the governing institutions exist to improve the living conditions of everyone, without exception. He emphasised the work which still has to be done in this field and had a special word for those who have difficulties in reaching the end of the month, young people with no opportunities to study, the elderly with their problems of loneliness, women who suffer discrimination and violence and families faced with problems of drug addiction. “All these people must know that the government has them very much in mind and is working to remedy their situation,” Antich said. The Balearic leader expressed a wish for all residents of the Balearics who live and work outside the islands, and all those who have come here from other parts of the world “to share with us their work and the hope of finding a better life.”
