It's roughly the same. Populism is stoked by chancers (Johnson, Farage, Trump, Musk etc.) who mainly take advantage of not particularly intelligent people whose lives are pretty crap. They need someone to blame for their awful predicament and this is usually 'others' for example, immigrants, the establishment etc. Just look at the rise of Hitler and the Nazis in the 1920's and 30's after the Wall Street crash - it's not dissimilar to what is happening in the west right now.
