The trade minister, Iago Negueruela, has announced that he will be looking to modernise and increase the competitiveness of small to medium-sized businesses, primarily those in the retail sector but not exclusively.

Recognising that processes to do this had been set in motion by the previous government, Negueruela intends to do more and has expressed a commitment to local traders and to a need to attain a balance between this and the aims of large retailers. This local business, he said, “needs to be protected”.

A four-year business plan is, therefore, to be drawn up and it was discussed during a meeting with the presidents of the Balearic and Spanish trade confederations.

Pau Bellinfante of the Balearic confederation referred to a need to boost specific areas of towns and villages through special activities and special offers in order to promote trade and to avoid a decay in local businesses.
