A 67-year-old British tourist was knocked over and killed by a car on the MA-2200 Pollensa-Puerto Pollensa main road late on Saturday night.

The incident occurred at around a quarter to midnight. It would appear that the woman and her husband were walking in the Pollensa direction on the path that runs along the left side of the road. They were crossing the road to where there is no pavement but seemingly did not notice a car heading in the Puerto Pollensa direction. The woman was hit and despite rapid attention from the Guardia Civil and ambulance crews, she died at the scene.

The driver of the car, a VW Scirocco, was a nineteen-year-old Spaniard, who tested negative for alcohol. He and his one passenger were both in a state of shock and required psychological assistance from the 112 emergency services.

The couple, it is understood, had only arrived in Majorca on Saturday and were renting a rural property. Everything about the accident appears to suggest that lack of knowledge of the road and the darkness led the couple to cross the road in a dangerous fashion.

The death adds to what has been a bad year so far for road fatalities in Majorca. The worst incident was the death of three people in the crash on the motorway near to the Puerto Portals exit, while two cyclists were knocked down and killed by a car in Llubi.
