A magical experience in which we will visit unique places of great beauty: Buddhist temples, tea plantations, spice gardens, traditional markets, citadels, rainforests, elephant sanctuaries and priceless artistic treasures are part of an itinerary designed in detail to experience the ancient Ceylon and surprise us at every moment.
This exclusive trip, for Mallorca Bulletin subscribers, will take us to Colombo, the bustling capital of the country. From here, our first route will take us to Kurunegala to visit one of the largest pagodas in the country: its Silver Temple formed by two overlapping shrines carved into the rock over a silver mine. Next we will visit the amazing Dambulla cave temple complex which houses exquisite cave paintings and more than 150 Buddha statues. The nearby Golden Temple conveys spirituality from the impressive 30 metre high statue of a seated Buddha.
Anuradhapura is one of the three sacred cities, with more than 1,300 years of existence. Under its Bodhi Tree, Siddartha Gautama attained spiritual enlightenment. We will stroll among the sacred paths of this revered city and continue our route to Mihintale, whose wonderful surroundings make it a must-see place and the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. The defensive walls of the citadel of Polonnaruwa, which once contained one of the country's most beautiful cities and ancient capital, blessed with irrigation canals and beautiful stone carvings, await us on our route. Also the Sigiriya Rock Fortress, protected by UNESCO and considered the eighth wonder of the world. The colourful streets of Matale and its renowned spice gardens will give way to the Kandy Bazaar, its arts and crafts centre and its traditional market of fresh fruits and vegetables.
The last part of the trip will take us to the misty hills that cover lush tea plantations, the popular Ravana waterfalls, 25 metres high, and the Elephant Transit Home, a centre for the care of young elephants that, once recovered, are returned to their natural habitat. The Udawalawe National Park is home to some 400 elephants; an open-top jeep safari will allow us to observe them in this sanctuary which is also home to deer, buffalo and jackals. Finally, the tropical scenery of Galle and shopping in pulsating Colombo will complete this unique journey of exceptional beauty.
