Fernando Simón. You’ll no doubt remember him. He spoke to us every day. The director of the Centre for the Coordination of Health Alerts and Emergencies, he still does speak. It’s just that we don’t pay as much attention as we used to. Is this how it is with Covid?
The Blog: Whatever you say about tourism, say nothing
Dr. Simón attracted considerable attention and considerable opprobrium

Roger is spot on. The Mallorca government had a massive opportunity to redesign its tourism, taking it away from the lowlife, low spend and build a high value model. Infrastructure investment is key to achieving this with upgrades to sewers in particular. And therein lies the problem. They won’t spend the money and just grab the cheap bucks.
To respond to your final paragraph....saying nothing about tourism is definitely not the right thing to do. That said, the Balearic government has been told for over a year now that they needed to do something and that the pandemic actually provides one of the best opportunities to do so. However, where I think many people are getting things confused is that changing the tourism economic model can (and should) only be done when it is done in conjunction with a broader economic review and strategic change agenda.....but sadly most of the comments that get to the media are made by people who don't actually properly understand tourism or strategic development. Much of what is said and written at present is all geared towards discounts, incentives etc etc, none of which are of any long-term value and will in fact make the tourism sector worse in the Balearics not better...but again the government have been told this but take no notice of expert advice so those of us who live here will just have to accept that it is what it is.
