Carmina Burana returns to Palma with live music and incredible performances on stage. | Palma Auditorium
Carl Orff’s most famous work, Carmina Burana, was first performed in Frankfurt in 1937.
There is debate as to whether the work’s subsequent popularity with the Nazi Party was indicative (or not) of his own association. Whatever the truth of this, it was the most famous work of the Nazi era and then gained worldwide recognition following the war.
Based on poems from a mediaeval collection, Orff originally conceived Carmina Burana as a performance with dance and stage action. It has been performed in Mallorca in its conventional form on occasion but never like it will be by the company La Fura dels Baus, which was formed in the Catalonia village of Moyà at the end of the seventies by street performers and then developed into a major theatrical company. It featured, for instance, at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. This is a sensational show that has so far been seen by more 200,000 people at various venues and which takes Orff’s concept of dance and stage action to a totally different and spectacular level.
