Carmina Burana - the humanoid version

Mallorca can’t get enough of ‘Carmina Burana’.

A few weeks ago, the Catalonia dance company La Fura dels Baus presented a version of Carl Orff’s most famous work “like you’ve never seen it before”. In August, the Szeged Contemporary Dance Company will present an interpretation for which the same description is appropriate.

Orff is remembered as a composer and one of Germany’s finest of the twentieth century. But had he been around today, Carmina Burana would probably have been promoted as multi-disciplinary. He conceived it as a dramatic mix of music, movement and speech. Choreography was therefore integral and helps to explain why it now inspires highly innovative dance interpretations.

The Szeged Contemporary Dance Company from Hungary began as Szeged Dance Ballet in 1987 and has always sought to enhance contemporary dance culture. Its version of Carmina Burana is populated by humanoids trying to survive with their fears in the midst of a unique civilisation.
