Jesús Carmona, the dancer who has been described by The New York Times as "a world flamenco phenomenon", comes to the Auditorio Víctor Villegas on 8 July to take another step towards absolute truth and transform stillness into movement and emotion with his latest work, Baile de Bestias. | Youtube: distribucion arena
Jesús Carmona was born in Barcelona, but his Catalan origins haven't prevented him from becoming one of Spain's pre-eminent flamenco dancers and choreographers.
In 2020, he was awarded Spain's national prize for dance and the Benoise de la Danse prize (the dance 'Oscars') for best dancer in the world.
He tells the story that he got a phone call from the culture ministry informing him of the national prize when he was in a Mercadona car park. He started crying like a child. It offered some financial salvation, as the pandemic had left him almost penniless.
His latest production, 'Baile de Bestias' (Dance of the Beasts, which he is presenting in Palma) was born out of the depression he suffered during the pandemic. Critically acclaimed, it is the work of a dancer who is considered to be a genius. In Palma, the performance is part of this year's Festival Paco de Lucía Mallorca.
