The 16th edition of the Fira del Vi attracts more than 40 wineries. | CURRO VIERA
In the summer of 1999, a group of friends formed the Associació Vi Primitiu de Pollença.
“Primitive” doesn’t mean how it may sound, as it was used to transmit the notion of simplicity and of being synonymous with the fruit of the land - grapes for wine. It was suggested by the poet Miquel Bota Totxo.
The association brought together those involved with winemaking and others who wanted to learn about wine. Five years after the association was founded, the first Pollensa Wine Fair was staged. At that time, the wine industry on the island was flourishing. New bodegas were appearing, and so the fair became the pre-eminent showcase for Mallorca’s wines.
Each year there are between 35 and 40 “cellers mallorquíns” plus representation from the mainland (the final list has yet to be released) for what has become an essential event for the island’s wine industry.
