Giant insects land at the Fira de la Terra and fill the streets. | E. QUEIROLO
After the Holy Roman Emperor Carlos V decided that Llucmajor should be able to hold its first fairs in 1546, much to the disgust of Inca (and Sineu), who had objected, the timing of the fairs revolved around the feasts of Sant Miquel, the Archangel Michael, on September 29, and Sant Lluc (Saint Luke) on October 18.
Llucmajor’s fairs had to finish before Luke, and Inca’s couldn’t start until Luke.
Both towns came to have four fairs. In Inca’s case these are over three weekends plus the island’s biggest fair of all on a Thursday, Dijous Bo. The first of three weekend fairs is the Fair of the Land (loosely speaking). Inca always has fairs within fairs, and one of these is the Science Fair. Of other attractions, there is a Nit del Vi with wines from twenty bodegas plus tapas, food trucks and music.
