Chamber Orchestra of Europe will perform in the Pollensa Music Festival. | Majorca Daily Bulletin reporter
The Pollensa Festival is a highlight of Mallorca’s cultural calendar.
Founded by British violinist Philip Newman in 1962, its longevity is beaten only by the Chopin Festival in Valldemossa, which - like the Pollensa Festival - takes place in August.
The first concert for this year’s festival will feature the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Based in London, the COE was founded in 1981, the motive having been that musicians from the European Community Youth Orchestra and musicians by then past the age limit for this orchestra wished to continue performing together.
It has some fifty members and an impressive recording CV - more than 250 commercial recordings, three Gramophone Awards for Record of the Year and two Grammys.
In Pollensa, the COE’s conductor will be Daniel Harding, who is principal guest conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and combines his musical career with an entirely different one. Believe it or not, he pilots Airbuses for Air France.
