Cow competition taking place on Sunday. | J.SOCIES
No, cows’ week has nothing do with sailing, it has everything to do with cows - Friesians to be exact.
A highlight of the Campos May Fair is the contest for Friesians, a tradition of the fair for more than forty years. In 2016, the contest wasn’t held, not so much in protest but as a cry for help. The dairy industry was faced with a crisis caused by drought - the loss of forage - and a decline both in price and production.
Similar circumstances prevail today, drought on the mainland having begun to affect the supply of animal feed. While dairy prices have shot up, the fair is nevertheless a reminder of the quality of the island’s dairy - milk and cheeses. There is a milk market and a tasting of cheeses.
Another ingredient of the fair, so to speak, is Mallorcan Pa Moreno bread. A competition for this starts on the Saturday, with the final and the prize-giving following the prizes for the Friesians on Sunday. A fair that is representative of rural Mallorca at its very best.
