Mallorcan Pa Moreno bread competition. | Jaime Verd
No, cows week has nothing do with sailing, it has everything to do with cows - Friesians to be exact.
A highlight of the Campos May Fair is the contest for Friesians, a tradition of the fair for more than forty years; the fair is in fact called the Cows Fair. In 2016, the contest wasn’t held, not so much in protest but as a cry for help. The dairy industry was faced with a crisis caused by drought - the loss of forage - and a decline both in price and production.
The fair is a reminder of the quality of the island’s dairy, not just the cows but the milk and cheeses. There is a milk market and a tasting of cheeses, and another ingredient, so to speak, is Mallorcan Pa Moreno bread. A competition for this starts on the Saturday, with the final and the prize-giving following the prizes for the Friesians on Sunday.
A fair that is representative of rural Mallorca at its very best.
