Agricultural and ecological day in Porreres. | G. MAS
One more year, Porreres is getting ready to host the Agriculture and Ecological Day, an event that, for the past eight years, chooses a specific agricultural theme to open up constructive debate. This time, the focus of the day is on a vital resource for life: water.
With a persistent drought like the one surrounding us, water emerges as an unavoidable topic. "It is the most limited resource we have in Mallorca," declares Miquel Coll, president of APAEMA, the organizing entity. "In a context of drought that is becoming increasingly recurrent, the debate on water availability must be present in various sectors, such as tourism, but agriculture, which is the most sensitive to this issue, often takes a back seat. Because without water, everything falls apart. Because water is life, we must talk about it," he adds.
The activities planned for this edition of the Day are diverse and include open days on organic farms on Saturdays, April 13 and 20, two documentary screenings with discussions, one of them featuring the documentary "Ganado o desierto" at Cineciutat (Palma) on Tuesday, April 16, and a round table discussion on Thursday, April 18, at the Club Diario de Mallorca about water and agriculture, as well as presentations of educational projects in the field of ecology.
The highlight of the Day will be on Sunday, April 21, in Porreres where more than 70 stands from all over the islands will display and sell products with organic certification. Visitors will have the opportunity to taste and buy a wide range of products, as well as participate in commented tastings, showcookings, live musical activities, and spaces dedicated to children.
"It is an important milestone for the town," says Xisca Mora, mayor of Porreres, the municipality hosting the Day. "Beyond promoting organic agriculture, this event represents an example to revitalize our agricultural sector in Mallorca and focus it towards a more respectful agriculture with people and the environment," she emphasises.
