The Virgen del Rocio is a Marian devotion that originated at the Hermitage of El Rocio in Almonte in the Andalusian province of Huelva.
It is celebrated around the time of Pentecost and was declared a fiesta in the national tourist interest in 1965 - in El Rocio, that is, where there is a traditional pilgrimage each year.
In Mallorca, Santa Ponsa has become known for its Rocio fiestas. There is plenty of music and dance plus food and drink as well as stalls for various products. The religious content includes the pilgrimage to Son Ferrer on Saturday.
The official inauguration is on Friday evening for an occasion that attracts large numbers of people from across the island.
