Thousands of visitors on Dijous Bo. Inca successfully experienced the Gran Fira without the crowds of other years in 2022. | P. BOTA
As fairs go, they don't come any bigger than Inca's Dijous Bo.
More than just a fair, it is a social occasion - one for the whole island.
The fair's traditions are rooted in the land, and so major attractions are the animals, including the Mallorcan black pig, and the peasants' market.
These roots, so it is said, go way back to the middle of the thirteenth century and a donation by Pere I d'Urgell, the Lord of Mallorca, which supposedly helped create the famous Thursday market.
The literal translation is Good Thursday, but 'bo' doesn't necessarily mean 'good' in this context.
Historically, and the term Dijous Bo was first documented over two hundred years ago, it was because this was a special fair. The 'bo' implied that its scale and size were unlike any other.
Which remains the case to this day, while it long ago spawned Dimecres Bo, the Wednesday, a festive and party day.
