Correfoc for Sant Sebastia in Palma (2020). | Youtube: La Palmesana Magazine
It's not uncommon for demons' correfocs to feature more than one gang of demons, but there are only certain ones which bring together a whole host.
Inca's correfoc for the Santa Maria la Major Fiestas in November is one, Palma's for both Sant Joan in June and for Sant Sebastià are others.
In Palma, there are a number of fire-running demons' gangs, whereas everywhere else there is just the one (if any).
For the climax to this year's Sant Sebastià Fiestas, seven gangs from the city will be on the prowl. In addition, there will be the beasts, such as the Drac de na Coca fire-breathing dragon.
So, a great deal of terror will be stalking the streets of the city on Sunday (a couple of streets anyway, starting from the Paseo Mallorca), bringing all the spectacle and noise of what is arguably the most iconic of all fiesta events on the island - the correfoc.
Security measures
Palma City Council has established a series of security measures to guarantee the well-being and protection of those attending the Correfoc. The use of private pyrotechnics not controlled by the organisers is prohibited. Participants and spectators are advised to wear cotton clothing, long trousers and long sleeves, suitable footwear, a hat or headscarf, earplugs and protective goggles. Please note that glasses and camera lenses may be damaged by the fire coils, so extra precautions are suggested.
The organisation also advises not to throw water, not to touch, pick up or handle pyrotechnic devices, and to refrain from smoking or lighting fires near the containers of pyrotechnic material. As a precautionary measure, the public is advised to keep a safe distance from the performance and to avoid placing children and people with reduced mobility in the front rows. Despite these precautions, the Correfoc is an open and participatory celebration. The public is encouraged to dance with the dimonis, always maintaining a festive and respectful attitude.
Traffic restrictions
On the other hand, the local police have prepared a special device and from 12 noon traffic will be restricted on Jaume III street. Later, at 3.30pm traffic will be closed on Avenida Argentina towards Paseo Mallorca, and at the same time traffic will be banned on Avenida Antoni Maura towards Plaza de la Reina. Finally, at 10pm traffic will be reopened on all affected streets.
