The traditional Sunday Angel brings together hundreds of people to enjoy the last 'empanades' between games and 'folk dances'. | T. AYUGA
The pancaritat (bread with charity) pilgrimages should strictly speaking take place on Angel Sunday - the day of the Guardian Angel.
Once upon a time, the Guardian Angel was the patron of Palma, hence why the La Lonja guild building from the fifteenth century has a sculpture of the Angel. Saint Sebastian was to eventually replace the Angel in 1652 many years after his bone performed the miracle of ridding Palma of the plague.
Few of these parties are actually celebrated on Angel Sunday, so as Palma's is one of the few, it attracts special attention. The day out at Bellver Castle also happens to be by far the grandest of the parties. The pilgrimage with the Angel to the castle is the centrepiece of several hours of the day and starts at 11am. Events with include human towers and a K-pop performance. The Palma bus company, EMT, lays on a free service to the castle - departures every ten minutes - from C. Camilo José Cela.
