Thousands of people filled the beaches of Palma to celebrate the Nit de Sant Joan with dinners on the sand and fire rituals. Spectacular panoramic view of Can Pere Antoni, where it was difficult to find a free spot. | M.A. CAÑELLAS
Sant Joan Eve is one of the great nights of the Mallorcan summer.
While many content themselves with going to beaches for what may or may not be purifying and fertility rituals (this is the traditional thinking anyway), there are the organised events. And none is more spectacular than Palma’s Nit de Foc.
In the Parc de la Mar from half eight, there are two ‘correfocs’ - a children’s one and then the adults. Palma gathers numerous gangs of demons for the occasion, and there will be nine this year plus beasties of fire, such as the Drac (dragon) de na Coca. By the way, the true story behind the dragon concerns a crocodile that escaped from a ship.
As well as the demons, there will be concerts by Al-Mayurqa (folk) and Suasi i els Electrodoméstics (pop).
