The winter night of bonfires and demons

The January fiestas for Antoni, Sebastià and Honorat mean that streets are taken over by bonfires and there is a smell of wood-burning pretty much everywhere on the islands.

The fiestas blend into each other, but the night of January 16 stands out for being by far the most widespread of the fiesta occasions. It is a night of bonfires and demons, the different types of demon. There are the comparatively benign demons, ones who dance with the saint, and then there are the scary ones - the demons plucked from Hell, who run with fire.

There are correfocs in, for example, Alaro, Alcudia and Muro, while in the epicentre for the fiestas, Sa Pobla, the dancing demons act as a prelude to the pyromusical - the spectacular of video projection, music, mystery and fireworks.

If you are unable to get to any of the celebrations, the local broadcaster, IB3, usually covers some of them, and Sa Pobla's events will certainly be among them.
