Wine fair and the offer of must in Binissalem

Binissalem’s Vermar grape harvest fiestas conclude with the wine fair, which typically attracts people from across the island.

Longer established than Pollensa’s fair, it is one of the two main wine events in Mallorca and, unlike Pollensa, reflects the fact that the Binissalem is at the heart of a DO (designation of origin) region.

On Sunday, one of the two days of the fair, there is a mass that is followed by an act of offer. This is common enough, but in Binissalem there is added ceremony as it involves the vermadors and vermadores, young people of Binissalem who are - if you like - masters and maidens of honour, and the offer of grape must. This comes from the grape-treading competition, another feature of the fiestas.
