Miguel Poveda's glittering career as a flamenco and copla singer has been despite a background that was geographically distant to the Andalusia heartland of flamenco and copla and was without any family musical tradition.
He grew up in Badalona in the Barcelona province, his exposure to the music having been from the radio and his mother's records. He had a precocious talent for singing, and at the age of 15 in 1988 he performed at a flamenco club in Badalona. In 1995 he recorded his first album, and from that point on his star was very much in the ascendant.
In 2000 he was nominated for the first time for a Latin Grammy Award. In 2002 he toured the States. In 2007 he received Spain's National Music Award.
For the Paco de Lucía Festival Mallorca, accompanying musicians for his tribute to the great guitarist will include percussionist Paquito González, who featured on De Lucía's final album.
