Pitxorines is a project that was launched two years ago this month and which featured nine female Mallorcan musicians from different musical backgrounds.
The aim was to give new life to popular Mallorcan song with innovative interpretations and a blend of traditional instruments (the xeremia bagpipe, for instance) with piano, strings, flugelhorn, flute, double bass and various percussion instruments.
The blend of backgrounds is such that main vocalist Aina Tramullas is perhaps best known for her jazz performances.
The word ‘pitxorines’ is the plural of ‘pitxorina’, meaning cheerful, attractive (or amusing) young woman. It is a word that has fallen into disuse except in eastern parts of Mallorca.
