Guitarist José María Gallardo del Rey. | Juanlu Galan@
From Seville, it’s not surprising that guitarist José Maria Gallardo del Rey should have a close affinity with flamenco.
He had a close professional relationship with fellow Andalusian Paco de Lucia, and while De Lucia was to follow a path towards fusion with jazz, he has blended classical with flamenco. And to great effect, his works having included ‘Diamonds for Aranjuez’, inspired by Joaquín Rodrigo’s masterful ‘Concierto de Aranjuez’.
An ambassador of Spanish music, he has over the years received numerous awards and performed with the likes of Yehudi Menuhin and John Williams. The programme for the Santanyi festival will include selections from his acclaimed ‘Lorca Suite’, dedicated to the writer Federico García Lorca.
