Concert by SimfoVents Palma. | Facebook
Toccata is a musical form that originated in northern Italy towards the end of the sixteenth century.
This didn't have imitative of fugal interludes (essentially repetition or counterpoint at different pitches), but when it acquired broader appeal and was picked up on by the likes of Bach, the tocatta and fugue were combined; Bach composed Toccata and Fugue in D minor.
If fugue was the older of the two techniques (it came from the Middle Ages), passacaglia emerged at roughly the same time as toccata. Its origins were in the Spain of the early seventeenth century. Bach also adopted this and put it together with fugue - Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor.
Each of these are elements from early music and they will be combined for a concert by SimfoVents Palma at a fabulous venue - the Sant Francesc Basilica.
