Rancapino is the stage name of Alonso Núñez Núñez.
It comes from when he was a small child and a gipsy neighbour reckoned that he looked like a burned pine - his skin colour from all the sun in Chiclana de la Frontera, Cadiz. One of the greats of flamenco singing, he has worked with his son Alonso Núñez Fernández, Rancapino Chico, and it is the son, a leading flamenco singer in his own right, whose concert will close this year’s Paco de Lucia Festival.
In his early thirties, Rancapino Chico is especially regarded for remaining faithful to flamenco traditions with a purity of voice that has not been tainted by purely commercial interests. He attracted particular acclaim last year for a single to commemorate Mother’s Day. “With this song I want to remember mothers who have gone but who live in our hearts, as I remember my mother of my soul that I will always carry in my heart.”
