Eric Lu will be one of the pianists participating in this festival, which brings together leading figures of the instrument in the Cartoixa de Valldemossa. | R.C.
The Chopin Festival in Valldemossa is one of Mallorca’s most important musical events and is certainly the oldest.
The first festival was held in 1930. It was an initiative by the Mallorcan composer Joan Maria Thomàs to recognise the fact that Chopin (and George Sand) had stayed in Valldemossa almost one hundred years previously.
The second concert for this year’s festival features Chinese-American Eric Lu. From Bedford, Massachusetts, he was the 2018 winner of the Leeds International Piano Competition, has played with leading orchestras - London Symphony, Boston Symphony (for instance) - and has released critically acclaimed recordings under an exclusive contract with Warner Classics. His first release, in 2020, was Chopin, whose works naturally feature in the concert programme.
